Artist's Quotes: Dealing with Criticism

Monday October 8, 2007
It’s not always easy to not to take harsh criticism or ridicule to heart, but as the saying goes: “Don't mind criticism. If it is untrue, disregard it. If it is unfair, keep from irritation. It if is ignorant, smile. If it is justified, learn from it.” Hopefully this collection of artist’s quotes on dealing with criticism will help you when faced with destructive criticism. Thanks, excellent and helpful article for the creative life.

When you paint be willing to think over any good advice but there is a danger that you may drift from your artistic course and loose the freshness of your idea. Be confident yet relaxed and use whatever technique in order that your inner artistic spirit is in control.

We often learn bad habits as well as good ones. The best advice usually comes from those who know what they are talking about like an artist friend or tutor. Share you thoughts and ask for advice then with a kind of selfish determination carry your artwork through to completion. When the painting is finished whatever criticisms you may get you will also get commendation. It’s better for others to praise your work rather than yourself.

Thanks for the collection of quotes Marion – I’ll be referring people here.

I’d personally never heard of the one in your narrative so that was a bonus as well!
