There are a variety of ways in which to approach creating a painting, none of which is better or more correct than another. Which approach you take or prefer is a matter of personal preference, and will to some extent be influenced by your painting technique.As with all painting techniques, don't assume a particular approach won't work for you without having tried it. This is so helpful, I am sure that many will agree. It is one of the first questions an artist needs to think about before painting, something I did not learn in school! I have often rushed into painting and then ended up getting into a muddle trying to correct this and that etc. and eventually wasting the painting.
I remember reading amateur painter Winston Churchill’s comments on the intimidating blank canvas. He, early in his amateur painting career was starting to dab around with some tiny brush when a friend grabbed a big brush, swabbed a big chunk of color and then…broke the spell for him of the intimidating blank canvas.
