Red Cellophane Value Finder

Tuesday March 20, 2007
"An artist friend of mine has a value finder which consists of a frame enclosing a red piece of cellophane. It is so helpful to view your paintings and confirm your values! I believe it was a quilting notion but can't track it down. I can't even find the red cellophane! Can you help?" -- Dolores P.

Red cellophane can be hard to find because the colors available depend on what's fashionable at the moment. If you can't find it among the gift-wrap section at a newsagent, I would look in an a office supplies store amongst the plastic folders and file dividers where you may find some in transparent red plastic which will do the same thing. The quilt book publishers C&T Publishing have a 3-in-1 Color Tool that includes both a red and green value finder. A cheaper option would be to keep an eye out for a pair of 3D glasses that occasionally come free with kids magazines.

With reference to the red value finder, I have used red plexi-glass which I obtained at Industrial Plastics. I have a piece that measures about 3″ x 6″ and it works really well.
