Discussion: Why We Paint Self-Portraits
Saturday March 25, 2006
Talking on the Painting Forum about self-portraits, Sarah says: ""I think that painting a self portrait is such a good learning experience. It teaches or reminds us that just because you get the paint to look like a person doesn't mean it's a good portrait. Something more must be captured.
"I've done some really bad self portraits that looked like me ... well mostly like me. They were just missing something, soul, for lack of a better word. It also shows other people what you think of yourself. No one is going to paint you like YOU. So often we see ourselves very differently than others see us. It kinda lets them inside us for a bit."
