Art Forger Goes Legit

Friday December 9, 2005
In what was dubbed as the greatest art forgery of the 20th century, some 200 paintings were passed off between 1986 and 1994 by the artist John Myatt (with the help of an accomplice who 'autenticated' them) as genuine works by artists such as Klee, Giacometti, and Matisse. Police have recovered less than 80, which leaves you wondering where the others are...!

Now Myatt is legitimately selling his paintings, as "genuine fakes". Myatt's paintings aren't generally copies of authenticated works, but rather 'new' works. Myatt explains: "I use existing works by the painter to create 'new' work in his or her style sometimes this ends up coming very close indeed to an existing painting."
