Painting Quote of the Day: Caio Fonseca on Planning
Monday August 1, 2005
I'd not heard of Caio Fonseco before I read the feature on him in an old edition of Modern Painters magazine (which is, I guess, why one should try to get features written about you). Anyway, this quote on getting ready to paint struck me, so I thought I'd share it:
“I look at the canvas for a long time. I am not just looking at a blank canvas, I am looking at the space suggested by the proportions of the canvas. Eventually, inevitably, a form suggests itself."
"Once I get the germ of the idea, the whole nature of the problem shifts to how I can develop, understand, and maximize the idea. It’s now up to me to fulfil its implication. By far the most difficult moment for me is the beginning. Harder than finding the painting I am going to do, is deciding what painting I am not going to do.”
-- Caio Fonseca, Modern Painters February 2004.
